Bachlawa (Бахлява)

Bachlawa (Ukrainian: Бахлява, Bachliava) also known as Bachlowa (Ukrainian: Бахлова)

Location

Bachlawa is currently a small village with an approximate population of 200 people. The village lies in the administrative district of Gmina Lesko, within Lesko County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship. It’s about 5 kilometres (3 mi) south of Lesko. Before WW2, the village had a majority greek-catholic population.

Historical Background

The village was founded in 1376 under Rus Law, as Terpiczow (Polish: Terpiczów). Historical records show that the village owners at the time were Rusyn brothers Jacko, Jurko and Iwanko. By 1427 the village was the property of Matiasz ze Zboisk. In the 17th century the name of the village was changed to Bachlowa (Ukrainian: Бахлова). In 1921, the population of the village was 229 persons. Of those, 187 were greek-catholics. The village name was changed from Bachlowa to Bachlawa in 1968.

Bachlawa did not have a church so parishioners went to nearby church in Hoczew. In 1785 the village lands comprised 3.96 square km.
